15 Stories for 15 Days: Day Four

The 15 for 15 contest is held about once every nine months or so. The way it works is that every day at 8:30 WDC time, a picture prompt is posted. You have 24 hours to post your story that the prompt inspires. Here is the interesting part: You only have 15 minutes to write your story. You can think about it all day but once you start writing, 15 minutes is what you get.

My Entry

For just a moment, a long time ago, I felt myself falling in the freezing rain.

The next moment, the feeling was forgotten and I was once again running through the field. The twins were with me, laughing and chasing each other. It was warm out and the sun felt good on my back as I sat and watched them play.

A brief…something; maybe a memory, danced for a moment. It was just out of reach, but I could feel it. There was a tugging sensation, maybe a pulling. Maybe it was both and then it was gone.

They run over and throw their arms around my legs. They hug me fiercely. It’s as if they fear I will leave them. Don’t they know? They are everything to me. Without them, my life has no meaning.

Flash of light that I’m not sure I saw and then I feel my balance slipping away.

The twins each grab a hand and I spin. They are so light; their feet lift off the ground. They love when I do this and squeal with delight. I go faster and faster and then - I feel them slip from my hands and I fall to the soft grass. I roll over and…

The mud is dripping from the end of my nose. For some reason, I cannot find the strength to get to my knees. There is a loud “bark” and I am thrown to my side. This is not right! It’s dark out and the field has been replaced by mud with a backdrop of wooden structures. There are shapes coming my way. I know what they want. The twins! I have to find them. I have to keep them safe.

There they are; lying nearby. They smile up as I crawl over to them. When I get close, they come over and snuggle close. It will be okay now. As long as we are together…it will be alright.

It will be alright…

“Doesn’t look like you’d expect a killer to look like does he Sheriff?”

“No Sam, he doesn’t; but good riddance just the same.”
